  2. major, was reluctant when her mother first suggested she
  3. enroll in classes on artificial intelligence.
  4. But the senior at Virginia Commonwealth University began
  5. to see it differently as she looked into graduate psychology
  6. programs that explore human behavior in the workplace,
  7. which is quickly being upended by machine learning.
  8. Maeba, 21, is now pursuing a minor in AI.
  9. “It’s giving me an edge and standing out,” she said.
  10. Hiring has cooled for entry-level software developers —
  11. work increasingly done by AI agents — and college
  12. enrollment in computer and information science programs
  13. has been declining. Yet at campuses across the country,
  14. many professors are finding themselves busier than ever
  15. teaching students from a range of majors about AI.
  16. “We have to democratize it,” said Peter Stone, the chair
  17. of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin.
  18. “In the same way that everybody needs some degree of
  19. math, reading and writing, I think everybody needs a degree
  20. of AI literacy,” he said.
  21. Nationwide, enrollment in computer and information
  22. sciences continued falling this spring, down more than 8%
  23. at four-year institutions from the spring of 2025, according
  24. to the latest data from the National Student Clearinghouse
  25. Research Center, a dip that came as job postings for
  26. software developers dropped.
  27. Interest in attaining at least a bare-bones understanding
  28. in computer science — and particularly AI-enhanced
  29. coding — has exploded across different majors. Music
  30. students, for instance, are discovering tools that can easily
  31. do tasks such as editing or generating drum tracks.
  32. At Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia,
  33. assistant music professor Benjamin Guerrero is co-teaching
  34. a class next year with a computer scientist. “In my mind,
  35. AI is no more disruptive than the record player, the radio,
  36. the metronome, the synthesizer or the computer,” said
  37. Guerrero.
  38. Even before this latest surge in interest, STEM majors
  39. often took computer science classes to learn how to code
  40. for data-heavy research. But the learning curve was steep
  41. until new AI tools came along, said Murtaza Ali, a doctoral
  42. candidate at the University of Washington whose research
  43. focuses on computer science education.
  44. Yet, he said, AI also is stirring anxiety. The concern, he
  45. said, is that even if the AI is just being used to write code,
  46. it’s going to encroach so much that eventually some
  47. college graduates won’t understand the basic concepts
  48. in their field.
  49. “When you ask the AI to do it for you, on the surface it
  50. might just seem it is writing the code,” he said. “But
  51. under the hood, it’s actually also doing the understanding
  52. of the task for you.”
  53. Community colleges that want to offer non-credit classes
  54. are able to move especially fast. One in suburban Kansas
  55. City recently offered a non-credit “vibe-coding” class
  56. to teach nontechies to create working software.
  57. “What AI does is shrink that distance between a complete
  58. novice and an expert,” said Grant Carlson, program
  59. coordinator for workforce development and continuing
  60. education at Johnson County Community College.
  61. In courses for VCU’s AI minor, Althea Pappas said she’s
  62. exploring AI not to use in her career, but to help her
  63. answer philosophical questions. “What happens when we
  64. create actual life, or how do we even make that
  65. distinction?” asked Pappas, a music composition major
  66. entering her sophomore year.
  67. Meanwhile, what fascinates aspiring neurologist Makenzie
  68. Stovall is the idea that AI is trying to emulate the brain
  69. — an organ whose inner workings continue to leave
  70. researchers dumbfounded.
  71. “If I am going to try to make people’s brain the best it
  72. can be, well, then,” the 20-year-old VCU biology major
  73. asked, “why not study AI?”
