What students will learn

Being a serious student in an era when the tool that lets you skip all of it is one tab away. The subject we practice on is AI itself — how it is built, what it can do, what it cannot, and how to tell the difference between real work and the shortcut that only looks like it.

• Core skill: writing a precise specification, then checking a generated result against it — line by line.
• AI literacy: what a model actually does with a prompt, where it fails, and when not to reach for it.
• Data & systems: how data is stored, moved, and analyzed — where the machine ends and the network begins.

Prepares students for AP Computer Science A and for college and career work where AI is a tool, not a shortcut.

Classroom expectations

• Attendance & punctuality: bell to bell. Late-arriving students receive a same-day catch-up package on the site.
• Participation: ask three before me — a neighbor, the site, and MuggsAI (our in-class helper) — then bring me the question with what you tried.
• Assignments & deadlines: [late-work policy]
• Behavior: quiet independent work during work blocks; discussion in structured collaborative blocks.
• Phone policy: InspireNOLA Off and Away (Louisiana RS 17:239) — phones in the caddy at the door, out at the bell.
• Materials: Chromebook charged, notebook, pen or pencil.

What students need to be successful

• From home: a notebook and a pencil. That is the whole list.
• Provided in the room: a classroom set of Chromebooks (students do not bring their own) and a lab station PC with a large monitor for every 4–6 students.
• Class website: muggsofcompsci.net/cs1 — the home for everything below.
• Course calendar: muggsofcompsci.net/cs1/calendar — what we are doing each day, and the material for that day.
• Review tools: muggsofcompsci.net/cs1/review — a team review game and solo study rounds (10, 20, or 40 questions) that draw from every lesson the class has covered.
• AI tools I provide (local & cloud): MuggsAI (in-class helper, running in the corner of this deck), MuggsOfPrompts (sentence starters for AI work), MuggsOfCode, and more as we introduce them — students never need a personal AI account.

How families can support at home

• Check PowerSchool regularly for grades and missing assignments.
• Ask specific questions: “What was today’s spec?” beats “How was class?”
• Encourage consistent attendance, participation, assignment completion, and preparation.
• Create a regular time and place for studying or completing assignments.
• Contact me early when you have a question or concern — a short email on Monday is easier than a long one on Friday.
• Grades starting to slide? Email me and I’ll send you a weekly grade report.
